:: what
are ink jet printers? :: |
|
:: two
basic types of ink jet :: |
|
|
| |
|
ink jet printers are a
means of printing whereby the printer itself has no physical contact
with the surface on which it is printing. hence, the term ink jet, since
a jet of ink is projected out of the printhead though free air onto the
surface to be printed. |
|
ink jet coding falls into
two main types; "Drop on Demand" (DOD) and the other being "Continuous
Ink Jet" (CIJ). both of these units produce a dot matrix format print
type. the dot matrix format to create each character can be as little as
5 drops high by 5 wide, up to 21 drops high by 16 wide. the more drops
per character, the better resolution it would be. |

all types of industries
rely upon product marking, coding, dating and identification and until
the advent of ink jet coding, much of this printing was done by other
less efficient methods, or in fact, was not done at all. |
|
this system consist of a
pressurized pot of ink which is connected to each nozzle via a manifold
and solenoid. the solenoid is control by electronics to produce an
open-and-close situation to allow droplets of ink to be projected at the
appropriate time. |

ink jet coding had been a
boon in many production environments with its ability to code on various
shaped and textured surfaces without contact. Thus, enabling products to
be identified, batch coded or dated and enhancing both production
control and quality assurance. |
|
mostly used for small
character applications. this system incorporates quite complex
microprocessors to control both ink viscosity, ink flow and the actual
printing itself. the inks and the control of their viscosity are
extremely important factors which contribute to both the quality of
print and the serviceability of the printer. specialize inks are
manufactured under stringent quality control conditions. |

advantages of ink jet coding :: |
|
: non packaging application :: |
|
|
| |
|
zero contact between
printhead and print surface allows for products on high speed production
lines to be coded without disrupting the conveyor system. most
significant advantage of ink jet coding is the ability to change
print-out information without stopping product line. this information
can be varied from product to product, that is with each product being
individually numbered using the "serialiser" or alternatively the
internal clock updating and printing the time of day on each product. |
|
ink jet printing has
developed considerably and now there are multiple printhead units which
are commonly termed Graphic Systems. these systems are used within the
printing industry and others where specialist applications are proving
to be more effective. example, numbering of lottery tickets, numbering
of airline tickets, numbering of consignment notes and etc. graphic
applications also provide for variable information printing, such as,
addressing application on envelope. |

|
other printing methods
require product to have a flat and even surface to be able to print.
however, ink jet printers can print on variable surfaces whether they be
flat, undulating, rough or curved. |
|
new applications are
found, of which the cable marking industry is another example.
electrical cable is marked with not only the manufacturer, also its
size, grade, quality, measurement and etc. |
